Safe Toys and Gifts
As the holiday season approaches, we all look forward to the joy of giving and receiving gifts. While toys bring happiness and excitement to children, it’s essential to ensure they are safe and age-appropriate.
December is National Safe Toys & Gifts Month, a time to make informed choices that protect our children. Below are tips and trusted resources to help you select safe toys and gifts this season.
Toy Safety Tips:
- Always follow the recommended age range on packaging.
- Avoid toys with small parts for children under 3 years old (anything that fits inside a toilet paper roll can pose a choking hazard).
- Look for sturdy construction and avoid sharp edges or easily breakable parts.
- Ensure paints and finishes are non-toxic.
- Be Cautious with Button Batteries & Magnets. These can cause severe internal injuries if swallowed.
- Make sure battery compartments are secured with screws and keep magnetic toys away from young children.
- Check for Recalls. Stay informed at CPSC.gov/Recalls or Recalls.gov.
- Include Protective Gear For bikes, scooters, or skates, always pair with helmets and pads.
Resources for Safe Gift Shopping:
- Consumer Product Safety Commission: https://www.cpsc.gov/.
- Safe Kids Worldwide: https://www.safekids.org/.
- HealthyChildren.org (AAP): Toy Buying Tips.
- Prevent Child Injury Toolkit: https://www.preventchildinjury.org/toolkits/toy-safety.
Educational & Developmental Toy Recommendations:
- Best Toys Are Simple: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends toys that encourage imagination and parent-child interaction, not electronic gadgets.
- 0–6 months: Rattles, textured balls, soft dolls, high-contrast books.
- 6–12 months: Stacking cups, shape sorters, push-pull toys.
- 1–3 years: Wooden puzzles, building blocks, pretend play sets.
- 3–5 years: Board games, construction sets, dramatic play kits.
- STEM Toys: Open-ended kits that promote problem-solving and creativity (e.g., building sets, science kits).
Let’s work together to make this holiday season joyful and safe for all our children!
